Guardians and recovery

Most of the time, you don't need recovery. Sign in on your new phone: your key syncs through your Apple or Google account, so it is already there. See I lost my phone.

Recovery is for when your key is truly gone.

Your guardians

Every account has two guardians from day one:

• Nomapay's recovery service;
• an independent guardian service.

Neither can recover your account alone, and Nomapay can never recover an account alone. You can also add a trusted contact, so any two of the three can approve.

Step by step

1. Start recovery in the app: your phone number, a code by SMS or WhatsApp, then an identity re-check.
2. Create a new key with your face or fingerprint.
3. Both guardians approve.
4. A 72-hour wait. Your old devices, your guardians and Nomapay's cancel-only safety key can all stop it if it wasn't you.
5. Your account switches to the new key, with the same balance and history.

After recovery, the 24-hour safety window applies.

The honest limit

If you lose your phone and your Apple or Google account, and your guardians can't help, nobody can recover the account, Nomapay included. That is the other side of "only you can move your money". Keeping two-step sign-in on for your Apple or Google account, and adding a trusted contact, makes this much less likely.
